January: brainrot goes Soviet, agents go viral
The year opened with a genre. Soviet Brainrot, absurdist AI videos of Soviet citizens swimming in reactors and eating hazardous materials, narrated like a documentary, arrived in January as a parody of the sincere USSR-nostalgia videos of late 2025. Its cast, Cheremsha the rabbit-lion, Brdyshch the fish-dog politician, Syomga the radiator-dwelling rabbit-tiger and Petrovich the human mechanic, was the first meme family of the year, and Russian and Belarusian schoolchildren used it to laugh at propaganda.
AI had two January stories. Moltbook was a social network whose users were AI agents and whose humans could only watch, and the bots formed cliques and invented religions within days. February: the halftime show, the monkey and the penguin
February's biggest shared moment was the Bad Bunny Halftime, the first Super Bowl halftime performed largely in Spanish, and a month of reactions from people learning the words. The Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics ran from 6 to 22 February and supplied two templates to the feed.
The animals: Punch the Monkey, a small monkey at Ichikawa Zoo who carried a plush orangutan everywhere and was shoved around by the older animals, broke the internet's heart. Drooling Cat, a blurry cat that has stopped processing input, became the year's reaction cat. Gugu Gaga Penguin, an AI video edit of the Endfield player character, began with a post on 19 February, spread on Bilibili and Douyin and had figurines on sale before the West had seen it. Clavicular Mogged was a looksmaxxing incident treated as a constitutional crisis. The Okay Punch Kid video produced Ok Punch, the calm "okay" that precedes a decision. AI: the AI Impact Summit met in New Delhi from 16 to 21 February. On 28 February the Iran War began, which the dictionary files as context for several memes that followed.
March: Chainsaw Man, Pizza Movie and the end of Sora
March was the anime month. Thank You... Chainsaw Man, a meta-joke from the manga's final chapter redrawn with every other series, was Know Your Meme's Meme of the Month. Say Wallahi Bro gave IShowSpeed's tearful demand to the whole internet. Nick Wilde Scuba Dance cut a small pleased dance from Zootopia 2 and set it to everything.
Pizza Movie premiered at SXSW on 13 March, but the internet had already met it as a screenshot: two trailers edited together with the caption IM GOOD BRO, which became the I'm Good Bro meme and then, on 3 April, the number-one film on Hulu and Disney+. Sport: India's Third T20 Title on 8 March and the World Baseball Classic 2026 from 5 to 17 March. Platforms: the BET+ Shutdown was announced on 13 March. Also from March: Bro Failed One Test, the Big Arch Burger Test, AI Fruit Love Island, the Strait of Hormuz Bypass doodling contest and Misery (Pupsies), released 18 March and viral on TikTok in the months after.
April: Artemis II and the Family Guy stairs
The internet looked up for ten days. Artemis II launched on 1 April, set a record for the furthest humans from Earth on 6 April (252,756 miles, around the far side of the Moon) and splashed down near San Diego on 10 April. India's prototype fast breeder reactor reached first criticality on 6 April (Indian Fast Breeder) and the Vera C. Rubin Observatory reported more than 11,000 new asteroids (Rubin's 11,000 Asteroids).
Memes: Family Guy Running Down Stairs, a six-year-old clip that became the image of any group fleeing anything; Doorbell Chud, a real burglar who matched a cartoon; Reginald Skulinski Eating, the face of quiet concern; and the Hound Dog Remix, a phonk edit that was the month's transition sound. Invincible supplied two, the Thragg Panel Redraw and Wobbly Invincible. Scientology Runs treated real buildings as speedrun levels. Bedtime Stacking named the ninety-minute evening routine. Football gave Dictator Mbappé.
Industry: Nickelodeon Animation Folded into a CBS label, and AI Personalised Pricing entered the vocabulary via a study published 13 April. Wellness: the Egg a Day Study of 17 April, with its verb ("associated") underlined by the record.
May: Drake, Eurovision, Homer and the Barts
Music dominated May. Drake released Iceman and two surprise albums on 15 May (Drake Triple Drop), after a run of fan jokes about a title track rhyming "Iceman" with "nice man" (Iceman Meme) that the album then proved right. Eurovision in Vienna ended on 16 May with Bulgaria's first win and a title, Bangaranga, that became a noise and then a caption. The Queen Latifah AMAs were her first hosting since 1995. Du Bist Gut Genug, the wobbling German falsetto, was released in late May and would own June.
The Simpsons had a month. Homer Drops His Donut was the disappointment reaction; Homer Let the Barts Out, an AI song and video in which Homer loses control of dozens of Bart clones, was posted in May and became July's biggest meme, complete with a sequel. Other May formats: Director Christof from The Truman Show, Excuse Me Sir from The Boys, Hermit Purple Fence from JoJo, Welcome to Fortnite Sheldon and the Happy Birthday Daniel edit format. June: the World Cup, Train Dog and the trillionaire
The World Cup 2026 kicked off on 11 June across Canada, Mexico and the United States and produced the season's memes: Haaland Majin Buu, the Miku Custody Battle (matches as custody hearings over each country's fan-made Miku), the Norwegian Viking Row chant and the argument about Lighter (World Cup Song), the official anthem by Jelly Roll and Carín León. The Women's T20 World Cup 2026 began on 12 June and Le Mans 2026 ran on 13 and 14 June.
The month's meme was Train Dog: a golden retriever's head on a steam locomotive, panting in time, twenty-eight million views, and a rule that AI remakes misunderstand it. He Is 20 Years Old mocked the press's fixation on the Backrooms director's age. July: Jimothy, beast law and the 106th minute
Spain won the World Cup on 19 July, Ferran Torres scoring the only goal in the 106th minute of extra time, and the number became shorthand within the hour (Ferran Torres 106th Minute). Josh Kerr broke the mile world record on 18 July (Josh Kerr's Mile), and Glasgow 2026 opened the Commonwealth Games on 23 July as a damp encore.
The animal of the summer was Jimothy, a Seattle raccoon with short-spine syndrome and the silhouette of a sphere, Know Your Meme's July Meme of the Month. Beast Law was declared after a bison tossed a tourist and hundreds of snakes rafted down a river on the same weekend. Homer Let the Barts Out exploded, and Marge Kept the Lisas In answered it. Bald George Costanza was the redesign trend, Somebody Get These Beggars Out of Here the dismissal, Funky Ehhh the sound, Mbappé Special the noun for nothing, and I Talked to Mitch on the Phone the template for vouching for the unseen.

August: La Peace, Petra Parker and an eclipse
August's meme came from a mispronunciation. La Peace was Kai Cenat reading "lapis lazuli" on stream with Speed; within days he was a monk, a philosopher and a stained-glass window. Gucci Morty gave the aura vocabulary its portrait. Petra Parker, a fan-art trend reimagining Spider-Man as a trans woman, became a rare wholesome X trend with hundreds of artists in a fortnight. The Great Fandom Truce saw warring fandoms briefly unite to mock one Australian animated film.
TikTok's August: Petal Chair Choreo from Ariana Grande's eighth album, Reasons to Get a Bob, the Spider-Man Ceiling Trend and We Had ChatGPT Make Us a Script. From Glee and The Hunger Games came I Will No Longer Be Carrying Photo ID and It's a Clock. Niu Lai, a low-budget Chinese animated film about a heroic cow, was mocked and then sought out.
The sky: Eclipse Europe 2026 on 12 August, the first total eclipse on the continental mainland since 1999, followed by two weeks of bad photographs posted with pride; and the Roman Space Telescope, launched on 30 August. On 28 August Norway's King Haakon VIII succeeded his father.
What the year has been about
Four threads run through the eight months. AI video became a medium with its own genres (Soviet Brainrot, Homer, Socrates Skeleton) while the internet drew lines around what it wants made by hand (Train Dog). The anime and comic redraw replaced the two-panel template as the default format. Animals did what animals do every year, only more so: a monkey, a cat, a raccoon, a cow, a buffalo and a dog on a train. And the big shared events, the halftime show, Artemis II, the World Cup, the eclipse, still produced the memes with the widest reach, which suggests the monoculture is not as dead as it is said to be.
