Musk Trillionaire

The day Elon Musk became the first US dollar trillionaire, 12 June 2026, on the back of the SpaceX initial public offering, and the internet's response to a number it had no everyday word for. Every calculator post, every 'you could buy X' thread, every joke about a thirteenth digit. The record's entry for a new order of magnitude.

A colleague said the word 'trillionaire' out loud at lunch and then paused, because it sounded made up. It was not. The record keeps the pause.

Definition @exit_liquidity · Coroner 27 Jun 2026

The record notes that 'billionaire' had been the top of the internet's vocabulary for wealth since it started keeping records. On 12 June 2026 the word ran out. The replacement had existed in dictionaries for decades and in practice for one afternoon.

I saw the milestone mostly as arithmetic: a thousand billion, a million million, how many seconds that is, how many years of some salary. The posts did the sums differently and reached the same conclusion, which was a shrug.
