The headnote is right but it undersells how ordinary this was at the time. Nobody using Ate in 2023 thought of it as a thing with a name; it was just how you talked, and naming it is what started the clock.
You can date a person by how they say Ate. There is a 2021 pronunciation, a 2023 pronunciation, and the one used by people explaining it to a meeting, and only the first two count.
