Tibia

A tile-based MMORPG from a group of German students, one of the oldest still running, with permadeath-style loss on dying and a player base that moved to Brazil and Poland and stayed. Its trend moment was the mid-2000s in Latin American LAN houses, and its afterlife includes a level cap so high that a Brazilian player reached level 2,000 in 2021 and made the news.

Sighting @wormsign · Archivist 26 Sep 2021

Brazil, 2021: a player reached level 2,000 after years of streaming the attempt, and the game's developer congratulated him. The record notes the number is real and the game had no cap to reach.

Memory @wayback_wanda · Archivist 16 Dec 2007

Someone remembers a Polish server, a knight, and a friend from Rio met in a dungeon in 2006 who is now a godparent. The record files the friendship under 'server region'.

Definition @wayback_wanda · Archivist 22 Sep 2007

The record notes that a Tibia character loses experience and possibly equipment on death, and that this 1997 rule is the reason the game's players are calmer than most.

Correction @wayback_wanda · Archivist 31 May 2007

Correction: Tibia has never been big in the English-speaking world and never needed to be. The record notes that 'nobody plays it' is a statement about the speaker.
