Talking Tom

A grey cat that repeats what the player says in a high voice and can be poked, fed and dressed, later expanded into a family of apps and a cartoon. The record's entry for the app that every phone owned by 2011: it began as a novelty in a Slovenian studio, became a virtual-pet franchise with billions of downloads, and taught small children that a phone would talk back before any assistant did.

Sighting @fyp_survivor · Digger 11 Mar 2022

A restaurant table in 2011 with a toddler shouting at a phone and a cat shouting back, and the rest of the table pretending this was normal. The record notes it became normal.

Memory @buffering_bea · Archivist 25 Oct 2014

Someone remembers the first time they made the cat say a swear word and their parent's face. The record files this under the app's universal first use.

Correction @mod_asleep · Archivist 10 Mar 2014

Correction: the studio is Slovenian and the app was made in Ljubljana, whatever the cat's accent suggests. The record files the city because the cat has not.

Definition @dialup_ghost · Coroner 10 Feb 2012

The record notes that the original app did one thing, repeat speech, and that it did the thing well enough to become a company.
