Stoppage time that seems to stretch when a big club needs a goal, named for Alex Ferguson's Manchester United of the 1990s and 2000s and the late winners that kept arriving. Ferguson retired in 2013; the phrase did not. Any late goal for a big club gets 'Fergie time' from everyone else's fans.
There was an actual study on this, and United did get slightly more added time when behind. Slightly. The meme rounds 'slightly' up to a conspiracy, which is what memes are for.
Seen last night, 96th minute equaliser at Old Trafford, and 'Fergie time' trending in a country where half the users were not born when he managed. The phrase has outlived its own context.
The word survived its namesake by more than a decade because the thing it describes did not stop. Referees add four minutes, a big club is losing, the four becomes seven. Fergie time is the name for the suspicion.
