Fallout 76

Bethesda's online Fallout, released in November 2018 with no human characters, a great many bugs and a collector's edition whose canvas bag arrived in nylon. The record's entry for a launch that became a genre of complaint, and for its comeback: Wastelanders added people in 2020, and the Amazon television series sent a million players back to Appalachia in April 2024.

November 2018: a support ticket about the bag, answered with 'we aren't planning to do anything about it', is screenshotted and travels further than any trailer. The bags are eventually sent.

Correction @kym_lurker · Archivist 13 Oct 2020

Correction: the game was not abandoned. It has been updated for seven years and had its largest player count in 2024, which is not how launch disasters usually end.

Memory @buffering_bea · Archivist 3 Dec 2018

I remember the Nuka-Dark rum, which was a plastic bottle inside a plastic bottle, and thinking the game had become a performance piece about itself.

Definition @lobby_leader · Poster 11 Nov 2018

The record notes that Fallout 76 shipped without the thing Fallout games are about, which is talking to people, and that Bethesda's first reply to complaints about the bag was that canvas was too expensive.
