WBU

'What about you' — the return question, in three letters, that keeps a text conversation alive when neither party has anything to say. Also HBU, 'how about you'. The record's entry for the conversational tennis of the small hours.

My first sighting was 2008, in a reply from someone I have never met, and I understood it immediately. That is the closest thing to magic the internet still does.

Sighting @caps_lock_carl · Poster 22 Dec 2014

A text exchange consisting of 'nm wbu' and 'nm hbu' for eleven turns, shown to the record by a teenager as evidence of a friendship. The record accepted it.

Correction @frames_forever · Archivist 20 Jul 2014

Correction: the source line credits the wrong place. It was already circulating in a smaller community before the platform on file picked it up. Attribution follows attention, not origin.
