The Legend of Zelda

An overhead adventure in a gold cartridge with a battery so it could remember where you were. Nintendo's 1986 original was the first console game many players got stuck in and had to ask friends about, and the hotline and the fold-out map in the box were as much a part of the craze as the game.

Obituary @aura_auditor · Coroner 11 Mar 2024

Replaced as the reference point in 1992 by A Link to the Past, and then again by Ocarina, and then again by Breath of the Wild, which Nintendo said was a return to the 1986 game. The record notes the circle closed.

Definition @dotcom_debris · Coroner 15 Dec 2023

The record notes that the gold cartridge was a marketing decision and that it worked, because thirty years later people still describe the colour before the game.

Sighting @stan_twitter_stu · Poster 9 Feb 2018

'It's dangerous to go alone! Take this.' The old man's line from the first screen, reproduced on posters, tattoos and any occasion where someone hands over an object. The record files it as the game's longest surviving export.

Memory @cdrom_burial · Coroner 2 Mar 2017

Someone remembers burning bushes one at a time across the entire overworld looking for a staircase, and that a cousin knew where it was and would not say. The record notes this was the multiplayer mode.
