The record notes that the cake exists in the game — you see it — and that 'the cake is a lie' was itself a lie, which the record considers a better joke than the meme.
The Cake Is a Lie
Graffiti from a 2007 game warning that the promised reward does not exist, which became the phrase for any false promise for about three years and then a sign of having been online in 2008. The record's entry for the cake, which was, in the end, real, which nobody remembers.

Spotted on a laminated sign in a chain café, Brighton, Jul this year. The Cake Is a Lie, in a headline font. A manager did this on purpose and I would like their name for the record.

For the record: The Cake Is a Lie is not a joke, it is a shorthand. The joke is what happens when someone outside the group tries to use it as one.
