Stories

The 24-hour vertical slideshow — invented by Snapchat in October 2013, copied by Instagram in August 2016 with an honesty about the copying that was almost admirable, and then by Facebook, WhatsApp, YouTube, LinkedIn and, briefly, Twitter. The record notes 'posting to my story' now means the low-stakes version of posting, and that the format's genius was that it disappears before anyone can be embarrassed by it.

An earlier entry credited Instagram with Stories. The record notes Instagram's own CEO credited Snapchat at launch in 2016, that this was the first time a large company said 'they deserve all the credit' on the record, and that it then took all the users.

Sighting @frames_forever · Archivist 19 Dec 2018

Sighting: my nan said "Stories" out loud at dinner and then looked at me to check it had landed. It had not. Filing this as evidence of terminal spread.

Definition @dialup_ghost · Coroner 14 Feb 2018

Definition by contrast: Stories is not the older thing it gets compared to. The older thing needed context; Stories was the context.
