Sapa

Brokeness, personified — 'sapa' is the state of having no money and the spirit that puts one there, discussed on Nigerian Twitter from about 2020 as if it were a person who visits ('sapa don hold me'). The record's entry for the noun that turned poverty into a character, which was somehow funnier and no less true.

Correction @clanker_watch · Coroner 20 Sep 2025

A reader insists 'sapa' is older than 2020 and was in street use before Twitter caught on. The record accepts this and notes that sapa, whenever it started, has never once left.

Definition @ranked_rage · Poster 2 Dec 2024

For the record: Sapa is not a joke, it is a shorthand. The joke is what happens when someone outside the group tries to use it as one.

Sighting @livejournal_larry · Poster 5 Sep 2022

Seen in 2022 in a reply to a luxury-car post: 'sapa no go let me see this'. The record, likewise, could not see it.
