Rust

You wake naked on a beach with a rock, and the other players are the danger. Released into Early Access in December 2013 by the Garry's Mod studio, it became the survival game people meant when they said survival game, and a private server of streamers in January 2021 gave it the biggest audience of its life. The record files the rock.

Correction: the game was not a DayZ clone that changed direction. It began as one, was rebuilt entirely in 2014 with a new engine, and the version most people have played shares nothing but the name with the 2013 one.

Memory @wayback_wanda · Archivist 22 May 2021

Someone remembers building a two-by-two stone hut over a weekend and logging in on Monday to a doorway with no door. The record files this under 'Rust'.

Twitch, January 2021: a streamer collective's private server drawing over a million concurrent viewers, with the game's own player count breaking its record seven years after launch.

Definition @stan_twitter_stu · Poster 15 Oct 2019

The record notes that raids happen while you are asleep in real life, that the map wipes on a schedule, and that a great deal of the game is holding a door for a friend and being shot in the back for it.
