Putting the ball through an opponent's legs. The term goes back at least to the 1970s in British football, and the internet made it a genre: nutmeg compilations have been a Twitter and YouTube staple since around 2012, with the victim's reaction as the payoff. 'Nutmegged' is the verb, 'megs' the count.
In the playground it was 'megs' and you had to shout it or it did not count. Twitter kept the rule. If nobody captions it, the nutmeg did not happen.
Seen this morning: a 40-second clip titled 'nutmeg of the season', one touch, and the defender's face at full speed and then in slow motion. The slow motion is the whole reason the clip exists.
The oldest word in this glossary and the least changed. What the internet added was the counter: every player now has a running total of nutmegs given and received, kept by accounts that exist for nothing else.
