◐ Dying n. 14 yrs & counting Gaming

Fez

A two-dimensional platformer that rotates into three dimensions, with a language and number system hidden in its backgrounds for players to decode. Five years late and released in April 2012, it was the third subject of Indie Game: The Movie, and the sequel was cancelled by its developer on Twitter in July 2013. The record files the game and the exit together.

I remember a notebook full of drawn symbols and a friend saying they had 'done the owls'. The record notes that this is what 2012 sounded like for a certain kind of person.

Sighting @cdrom_burial · Coroner 10 Oct 2012

Twitter, July 2013: the announcement that Fez II was cancelled, following an argument with a journalist, and the developer stating he was leaving the industry. The record notes that he did, mostly.

Correction @kym_lurker · Archivist 24 Aug 2012

Correction: the game was not 'in development hell' in the usual sense. It was announced in 2007, won an award in 2008 while unfinished, and was repeatedly rebuilt. The lateness was real; the myth that it was never coming was not.

Definition @archive_dot_org · Archivist 24 Apr 2012

The record notes that the alphabet, the numerals and the tetromino codes were all cracked by players within weeks, and that a final puzzle involving a monolith was solved by brute force and is still not explained.
