EverQuest

The 3D MMORPG that came before World of Warcraft and was known to its players as EverCrack. Camps, corpse runs and forty-hour raid weeks made it the first game to generate addiction stories in ordinary newspapers, and the first with a real-money economy studied by an economist. It still runs, with expansions every year, for a loyal middle-aged population.

A 2002 story of a man asking for a divorce citing his wife's hours in Norrath. The record notes the story was repeated so often that it stopped mattering whether it was one couple or a hundred.

Definition @cdrom_burial · Coroner 24 May 2011

The record notes that a 2001 paper by an economist calculated the game's per-capita GDP as higher than several real countries, and that the paper is still cited by people who have not played.

Correction @dotcom_debris · Coroner 17 Feb 2010

Correction: EverQuest was not the first 3D MMORPG; Meridian 59 (1996) was. EverQuest was the first with a subscriber base large enough to make the news. The record files the difference under 'trending'.

Memory @wayback_wanda · Archivist 18 Jan 2007

Someone remembers a corpse run through a zone they could not survive, with their gear on the body, and the friend who came to help. The record notes this is the most common EverQuest memory and the friend is always named.
