Dongle

Any small adapter you did not want to need — the word, an older bit of computing slang for a copy-protection plug, became a public joke in September 2016 when the iPhone 7 lost its headphone jack and the MacBook Pro lost every port, so that the 'dongle' was suddenly the thing between your laptop and everything you owned. The record notes 'dongle life' was the cost of courage.

I remember when Dongle was still a niche thing — September 2016 — and you could use it without a footnote. The footnote arrived about six weeks later and never left.

Definition @kym_lurker · Archivist 19 May 2018

The record notes that Apple used the word 'courage' on stage for removing the headphone jack and that the internet replied with a photograph of a $9 adapter, and that both sides were, in their way, correct.
