The one thing missing from the headnote: Copium landed differently on people who had been online since the 2020s than on anyone who arrived later, and the later arrivals were the ones who spread it.
For the record — a university's clearing hotline hold message, seen 25 April. Copium appearing as a menu option. Someone in a meeting proposed this and nobody stopped them.
Filing to challenge the state. Copium is listed as Alive and I have counted live, non-ironic uses this month. Either the definition of the state is wrong or the state is.
I tried to explain Copium to my father in 2021. He asked, sincerely, what it was for. I explained. He then explained it, with my explanation attached, to his entire address book. That is how these things actually spread.
Best short gloss I have heard for Copium: the thing everyone knew about for about eighteen months and then agreed, without discussing it, not to bring up again.
