Command & Conquer

A real-time strategy game with live-action cutscenes, a bald cult leader called Kane, and a mineral called tiberium that everyone harvested and nobody understood. Westwood's 1995 game and Blizzard's Warcraft II split the genre between them for the rest of the decade. The 2020 remaster brought back the original with its source code released.

Obituary @screenshot_sam · Digger 18 Nov 2021

The series died in 2010 with a fourth game that removed the base building and was received accordingly. Westwood had been closed by EA in 2003. Kane, according to canon, lives.

Memory @hinge_historian · Archivist 14 Oct 2020

Someone remembers the game came on two discs, one for each side, and that swapping them with a sibling was the trade of the year. The record notes both discs contained the whole game.

Definition @caps_lock_carl · Poster 19 Nov 2016

The record notes that the full-motion video was filmed in a warehouse in Las Vegas with the studio's own staff as actors, and that Kane was played by the voice director. The performances are a genre in themselves.

Sighting @modemhum · Archivist 16 Jul 2015

June 2020: EA released the Remastered Collection and, with it, the original source code under an open licence. The record files this as the rare case of a publisher handing a fossil back to the people who kept it alive.
