In 2006 I could not have imagined explaining Bump to anyone. It did not need explaining. Now I have a note on my phone with the explanation ready, for when the young ask, and they do not ask.
Not quite what the headnote says. Bump was never really about the thing itself — it was a way of showing you were in the room when it happened. The meaning was the membership.
You can date a person by how they say Bump. There is a 1999 pronunciation, a 2006 pronunciation, and the one used by people explaining it to a meeting, and only the first two count.
