Buff

An improvement to a character's stats — a buff — and, as a verb, to make anything stronger, from games into everyday: 'they buffed the coffee'. The record has nerf; this is its opposite, and the record notes both are now used about real things.

The record notes that 'nerf' and 'buff' are used about restaurant menus, government policies and children's allowances, and that game-balance vocabulary has become a way of thinking about the world.

Correction @wayback_wanda · Archivist 10 Sep 2012

The record spells it one way; the original post spelled it another. I would keep the original, typo and all. The typo is the provenance.

For whoever reads this in ten years: Buff arrived in 1999 and for about a month it was the only correct response to anything. Then it became a response to itself.
