Correction to the headnote: Bot was not coined, it was noticed. Someone said it, someone else screenshotted it, and the screenshot is the coinage.

An automated account, and, since 2016, the accusation — 'you're a bot' — levelled at anyone who disagrees. The record's entry for the machine that became an insult, and for the fact that calling a person a bot is now the internet's way of ending a conversation with a human.

For whoever reads this in ten years: Bot arrived in 1995 and for about a month it was the only correct response to anything. Then it became a response to itself.
