Adobe's image editor, first sold in February 1990, and the reason no photograph on the internet has been trusted since. Photoshop gave the web a verb, a genre of contest and a standing accusation. The record's entry for the software behind every 'this is shopped' comment.
The record separates the tool from the genre. The tool edits images. The genre is the image that has been edited badly enough, or well enough, that a thread forms to argue about which.
Seen in the gallery: the claim that anyone who Facetunes a selfie owes a debt to Photoshop, nearly thirty years on. The record agrees and notes the debt has not been paid.
My first Photoshop contest was on a forum in 2003: a photograph of a cat and instructions to put it somewhere it should not be. I put it on the moon. Somebody else put it in the Last Supper and won.
The record notes 'photoshopped' entered ordinary speech as a verb well before most people had used the program, and that it survives even now that the editing is done on a phone by something else entirely.
