Super Mario Odyssey
Nintendo's 2017 Mario, in which a hat named Cappy let players possess a dinosaur, a frog and a slab of meat, and a New Donk City musical number, 'Jump Up, Super Star', made the internet cry over a plumber. The record's entry for the Switch's first-year double, alongside Breath of the Wild, and for the moment the console's launch stopped being a question.

Super Mario Bros.
The side-scrolling plumber game that rebuilt the games industry after the 1983 crash. Packed in with the NES, it sold tens of millions of copies, taught a generation the phrase 'the princess is in another castle', and in 2021 a sealed copy sold at auction for two million dollars, which the record files under 'the craze never entirely ended'.

Super Mario Run
Nintendo's first Mario game on a phone, an auto-runner in which the player only taps to jump, released with a free taste and a single ten-dollar unlock. The record's entry for the pricing argument: it was downloaded tens of millions of times in its first days, and the fraction who paid became the most-quoted statistic in the industry, used by every free-to-play developer to explain why they did what they did.

Super Mario 64
The first 3D platformer that worked, with an analogue stick built for it and a castle full of paintings. It sold the Nintendo 64 in 1996 and then, twenty years later, became the most-studied game in speedrunning, with its A-button challenge, parallel universes and a sealed copy that sold for $1.56 million in 2021. The record files both lives.
