Europe Tells Obama To Give Up Internet, Preps Microsoft Hearing

s An ordinary story; The US military and academia may have given the world the internet, but the European Commission’s media and telco commissioner Vivianne Reding has called on President Obama to hand over control of internet domain names and IP addresses to a proposed new international body. Control of the underlying network infrastructure was passed from the US government to California-based non-profit ICANN in 1998, but this term ends on September 30 and Reding wants a new system managed by a “G12 for Internet Governance”.

Reding in the release: “I trust that President Obama will have the courage, the wisdom and the respect for the global nature of the internet to pave the way in September for a new, more accountable, more transparent, more democratic and more multilateral form of internet governance … In the long run, it is not defendable that the government department of only one country has oversight of an internet function which is used by hundreds of millions of people in countries all over the world.”

The commissioner’s proposed new agency would include two representatives each from North America, South America, Europe and Africa, three from Asia and Australia and the chair of ICANN itself, but as a non-voting member. And the commission will on Wednesday host a public hearing on internet governance in Brussels to take views on its proposals. Europe last called for internationalisation of ICANN in 2006. rest and source

Give Up Internet’s  Note

This is absolutely Obama’s idea.

Barack Obama’s Webheads are getting ready to launch a new Twitter feed for President Change. But the White House already had a Twitter account. It has disappeared down the memory hole.

d Barack Obama’s Webheads are getting ready to launch a new Twitter feed for President Change. But the White House already had a Twitter account. It has disappeared down the memory hole.

Given the widespread belief that Obama invented the Internet, many will scoff at the idea that the Bush White House had a Twitter account. But it did — and the administration handed over twitter.com/thewhitehouse at noon on Inauguration Day, just like it did with the whitehouse.gov website. Google still has the old account, with Obama’s tweets, in its cache.

Valleywag alum Paul Boutin suggests on Gadgetwise that this is a simple rationalization of accounts, matching the definite-article-free “whitehouse” username the Obama team uses on Flickr and YouTube. But Obama’s Twitterers didn’t just change the username on the account; they started fresh, wiping out all of the White House’s existing Twitter followers, and the entire archive of messages.

Perhaps it’s safe to assume that the dwindling fans of the Bush White House wouldn’t want to transfer their allegiances. And many of the Bush tweets were just broken pointers to pages on 43’s now-archived website. But there ought to be something about the White House that transcends its occupant. A new president doesn’t move his residence from 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. There’s something about this move that smacks of change for change’s sake. rest
